Sunday 25th September - Start point 07.30am at Ouse Bridge!
This once in a decade event will take place this year on Sunday 25th September. It will be the second Boundary Walk of the 21st Century. There were a total of five walks in the last century in 1912, 1928, 1974, 1985 and 1996.
A little bit of history...
In medieval times ‘Beating the Bounds’ was a regular practice throughout the country in which parishoners walked the boundary to assert their rights to the land and prevent encroachment by neighbouring parishes. It may also have served to teach youngsters the limits of their parish. The ‘beating’ refers to the symbolic beating of the ground and notable landmarks on the perimeter with sticks (and some say the beating of the children as well to encourage their memories). The custom generally took place during three days known as Rogation Days which fell between the 5th Sunday after Easter and Ascension Day. It is not known when the Bassenthwaite boundary was first walked in this way as no formal records were kept but it was certainly well before the first recorded ascent of Skiddaw in 1684 by Bishop Nicholson.
The parish covers an area of four square miles and the complete walk is over 16 miles long including the 3,000 ft (931 metres) ascent of Skiddaw. Marshals will accompany walkers at each stage. Appropriate clothing for mountain-top conditions should be carried and stout shoes or boots are advised. Bacon Butties and drinks may be purchased at the summit of Skiddaw. At the completion of the walk there will be a short Service at 3.45pm. Teas will be available at Mirehouse from around 3pm onwards. No charge will be made for the teas but donations are invited.
