Bassenthwaite Parish Room stands by itself on a winding country lane in the heart of the English Lake District surrounded by fells and with a spectacular immediate view of Skiddaw rising up just a few fields away.
The original hall was built in 1908 for a group known as the Skiddaw Humane and Friendly Society. It was bought by Mr Hartley of Armathwaite Hall and given to the people of the parish. It is now owned by the Parish Council. Responsibility for “provision and management of a village hall” is devolved to the Parish Room Committee which manages its own finances and has charitable status. The committee is elected every year, a proportion being directly elected by residents of the parish at the Annual General Meeting and the remainder being appointed as representatives by the Parish Council and other local organisations.

The rebuild project was completed in 2017, with an offical reopening in October of that year. As part of the Big Lottery Fund secured by the Steering Group, a Hub Coordinator, Holly Stephenson, was employed on a part-time basis for the first year in the new building, to assist the Management Committee with bookings, communications and website rejuvenation.
